Stainless Steel Crowns

Stainless steel crowns are silver caps that cover the whole tooth. Porcelain crowns are tooth colored. Dental crowns for children are generally completed in one visit, and will usually last until the tooth falls out at around the age of 12.

Advantages of Dental Crowns

Often after a filling, you can develop a cavity around the filling or on the surface of that same tooth. If that occurs, the tooth may need a stainless steel crown, or if the cavity is extensive, it may need to be extracted and a space maintainer may need to be placed. This would mean the child would have to undergo an extra procedure for the same tooth. By placing crowns on molars, all surfaces of the tooth are covered, and it is less likely to need further treatment.

What are the advantages of crowns over fillings?

- Durable.
- Less expensive in the long term.
- Crowns are less likely to fail and need additional work, which can save money.
- Completed in a single visit.
- Tooth-colored options for patients concerned about aesthetics.

Composite Strip Crowns or Resin Crowns

This type of crown is aesthetically pleasing. Installing these crowns requires more time to perform. Because of the time required, these crowns can be difficult to place on small, uncooperative children - nitros oxide is recommended. Strip crowns are entirely made of composite “white” “filling material. This filling material looks very natural; but over time, it does have a tendency to absorb stains and discolor. It can also attract plaque if not kept clean. Resin crowns are also much weaker than stainless steel crowns, and there is an increased chance that a piece or corner of the crown may fracture off.
